I am also joining up with the British army so did my Grand Father in WW2. After the Boere Oorlog the British love the Afrikaners and even today we gain alot of respect for our morale values, and the fact that we give 100% in iraq, Afghanistan. What went on on the camps certainly was not necessary except in a morbid Machiavellian sort of manner. The concentration camps were built on the most INHOSPITABLE areas where cold whether & flooding were frequent which lead to serious illness which would in total soon kill close to half of the total Boer child population.
……It is a terrible fact that the camps were not managed properly, resulting in a lack of proper food distribution and starvation of many of the detainees, definitely a tragedy that could have been averted. Although, the camps were still necessary to prevent the Boers fighters from receiving supplies.
It is a fact that the Boer guerrillas were collecting supplies from their home bases, and returning to the bush to continue their war against the British. Therefore, it was necessary for the British to contain Boer supporters. You may also not be aware but Afrikaners loyal to the British were also put into the camps for protection….
Putting the Boer civilians in the camps was immoral & totally unnecessary as the British had first burned their houses & farms down making your assertion rationalizing the camps to deprive the Boer fighters of their supplies a total moot point. The British wanted to make sure that the Boers would not be a continued obstacle so they tried to eliminate as much as they could under the radar.

Those Boer’s certainly taught us a good lesson in guerrilla warfare; I guess thats why Churchill gave the Boer Kommando’s a nod when he named the British Special Forces Commando’s in WW2. However, as always the British triumphed in the Boer War. Putting all those Boer’s in camps had to be done to deprive the Boer fighters of their supplies and bring the conflict to an end.
